Why conduct pumping tests?

Conducting well and aquifer pumping tests are essential and allows us to determine:

  • The catchment work’s operating yield by testing them at gradually increasing flow rates for a sufficient length of time
  • The quality of the water and possible variations during pumping (physically, chemically, and bacteriologically speaking)
  • The hydrodynamic properties of the aquifer in terms of permeability, transmissivity, radius of cone of depression, recovery, and storativity.

Approach

will assist you throughout the pumping tests. Nevertheless certain data (bibliography) need to be provided such as:

  • Any data from the driller that can help us establish the technical and geological profile of the borehole namely in terms of flow rates, permeable zones, and static water level
  • Any general geological data that will allow us to correlate the intake zone with the potential aquifer zone (sandstone, alluvium, limestone, etc.)
  • Any data pertaining to boreholes in the vicinity

Based on this data we will help you establish which type of pump to use as well as any other necessary equipment, the pump’s position in the borehole, and its TMH (Total Manometric Head).

Then, depending on the issues at stake, we will – in collaboration with the client – draw up a complete program for the pumping tests, be they:

  • Well tests (step pumping tests)
  • Aquifer tests (long-duration pumping tests)
  • Semi-continuous monitoring of certain properties such as water level, flow rate, turbidity, conductivity and temperature

Interpretation of test results

The results of the pumping tests will provide you with a clear picture of:

  • The well’s main characteristics in terms of maximum operating yield and critical discharge
  • Which type of submersible pump is the most appropriate
